Vladimir Kramnik is the Champion

The Vanquished and the new Champion25-year-old Vladimir Kramnik, from Tuapse, Russia achieved his life time ambition by winning the 14th World Chess Championship. Kramnik won games 2 and 10 and drew the rest to take the crown at the Braingames World Chess Championship, London. With this draw Kramnik takes an unassailable lead at 8.5 - 6.5 and walks into history as the first human being to win a match against Kasparov. The game 15 was a Catalan Opening and for the first time in the match Kasparov opened with his 'd' pawn. For Gazza, winning the final two games was a must, to retain his 15 year domination as World Chess Champion. Kasparov played the game tactically, with a solid middle game ending up with a slightly favorable position. Kramnik, known for his good preparations, defended well to settle with a draw after 38 moves and took away the crown from his former tutor.  It also is the first occasion in the World Championship history that the defending champion has failed to win a single game. With this crown, Valdimir Kramnik takes away the two thirds of the USD 2,000,000 prize fund.

At the start of the match Gary was the bookmakers favorite. He missed his advantage in games 3, 12 and 14 of the match. After the 15th game he said "I wasn't outplayed on the board, I was out prepared. He did play better than me in the match, but I don't know if that's saying much" Both the players were relaxed during the press conference. Kasparov, now the ex-world Chess Champion said " I'm just waiting for Braingames to tell me how I can play another match with Vladimir". Kasparov added "I felt I had no openings with White or Black. Kramnik made some bold choices and my opening preparation was busted. If you think I didn't prepare for this match, wait until the tournaments, till Wijk Aan Zee". Kramnik reacted "These [openings] things are relative. In the middle of the match I also felt without openings." When asked about reunification with FIDE, Kasparov said "this was the real world championship and that Kramnik was the 14th World Champion." Kramnik said "I'm waiting for Braingames to work it out." The 16th and final game will be played on Saturday the 4th Nov.
